Love, Happiness and Music

“You love what you do don’t you” whispered one of my care home dancers this week after we finished our warm up routine. ‘‘I absolutely do’’, I replied. Each day I reflect on how lucky I am to share something that I love with others. I get to see people enjoying movement, creativity and music. I get to see them smiling, laughing and dreaming.

Dance has a wonderful way of meeting us exactly where we are and lifting us a little higher. Good day? Let’s dance. Bad day? Let’s dance. Tiring day? Let’s dance. Sad day? Let’s dance. It’s the love of dance that carries us through the tricky times. It’s a place we come to feel again where a heavy day is turned into something lighter.

It’s more than routines, it’s more than technique, it’s an everlasting love that sees us through it all. I get to see so many people from all walks a life developing their own relationship with dance. I get to help them learn new things and share happiness in music. I get to stand by them as they tackle a tricky pirouette and celebrate with them when the landing is executed perfectly. I get to watch them change as their technique improves and their confidence grows.

To teach dance is a gift; so yes I love what I do and the fact I get to teach people from all walks of life makes me love it that little bit more.
